one year later…

flying after a long day waiting

Firstly – this was exactly one year to the day since my accident in Slovenia… I was keen to have a fly and celebrate being well and in the air again…

A few things happened to distract me… firstly there were a bunch of modelers on the ridge, I even gave them a lift up and had a brief chat – they said they would land while we flew so it all seemed fine…

Secondly Chris Townsend broke his arm while landing so I was phoning the ambulance and along with everyone else that made sure that he was ok and no tasteless joke was left untold while he was snorting on gas and air…

After all this I felt out of sorts and de-rigged.. it was raining after all… then almost right away it cleared up and got sunny so I rigged again and took off…

The modelers did not clear the ridge and in fact kept getting close or too close for me… the lift was broken but I just never really engaged with it dithering about getting into turns which inevitably put me in the bowl which was rough and turbulent and full of models…

Over the bombout field I found some lift that gave me hope to return to the hill and turned a few times there but slipped out and lost it all… committing me to an untidy landing… bah!!

What can I say – I was very sorry about Chris’ accident and hope he is ok – for me this flight illustrated just how important a good positive attitude and a clear focused mind is in exploiting what the air gives you – there was nothing wrong with the day – it was all in my head…

Happy however to have been flying at the exact moment one year later that I was being carted into a helicopter… that part felt very good indeed…

[Feb 2013 – Someone asked me on the train last night how was my leg – I said ok but felt bad that I had had another accident since that needed a helicopter and hospitals and a flight home etc etc – lets make sure that this is not a repeating pattern and be safe this summer]
